The House of Representatives has approved a bill that will extend the validity of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results by four years.
Second Reading of the JAMB Result Validity Bill is passed
Rep. Tolulope Sadipe (APC-Oyo) sponsored the JAMB Act Amendment during Thursday’s plenary.
Leading the discussion, Sadipe claimed that despite taking the UTME and scoring well, many students were ultimately denied admission despite having done nothing wrong.

She claimed that these children’ parents were forced to foot the bill for them to take the exam the following year.
She claimed that JAMB’s justifications in this respect kept citing that it was a way for them to generate income.
Nkem Abonta (PDP-Abia) countered that prolonging the JAMB-UTME result’s validity would undermine the purpose of the entrance exams.
According to him, the JAMB Act aimed to control how students entered Nigerian universities
Additionally, it would create extra issues if the result was only valid for two to three years.
Abonta advised the appropriate committee to carefully consider the proposed amendment in order to avoid making matters worse while trying to find a solution.
