How To Read Lexis And Structures In English 2021
- Do not rush to pick an option that LOOKS CORRECT. Some options can be categorized as fair, good, likely, reasonable. And u might be tempted to pick them whereas what the examiner wants from you is the best. To pick the best option you need to review all the options available.
- Speed and accuracy are essential under “lexis &structure” sections of the exam. Be time cautious so you do not spend too much time on a particular question while also making sure you understand the question and answer appropriately.
- Make sure to have a good understanding of the areas that make up lexis and structure such as:
Vocabulary i.e. meaning, choice, and spelling of words
Meaning of words i.e definitions, illustrative sentence, words in their context, prefixes, suffixes, words from various sources such as Latin, Greek, French etc.
Synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, homophones and malapropisms.
Idiomatic Expressions and Collocation such as “hook, line and sinker” or “Tom, Dick and Harry” etc. The total meaning of these words cannot be arrived at by the consideration of the dictionary meanings of the words in the situation they appear.
Grammar/Parts of speech – nouns, verbs( finite, infinite, transitive, intransitive), pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, phrases and clauses.
D. The use of dictionaries and thesaurus available at good libraries is essential for vocabulary development which constitutes the foundation for lexis and structure. Students should also try their hands on crossword puzzles, anagrams, word games such as scrabbles, read novels, magazines and newspapers.
E. Students should also take note of foreign words and of recent changes in the language with new terms such as “gridlock” “nerd” “wannabee” “stakeholder” or “ luvie”, etc.
Most importantly don’t forget to practice with past questions to give you an idea of the kind of questions that will most likely appear during your own exam.
